For a long while all Travis did was hold onto Jake and immerse himself into the feeling of having him here, face pressed into the blond’s neck and arms firmly wrapped around the broad shoulders. The sound of blaring music from the front of the warehouse along with the rumble of the garage door opening made him realise they were still stood outside and his feet were beginning to get cold from standing on the cool stone of the floor.
One hand moved to cup the back of Jake’s neck and he straightened so they were face to face once more. “Should get you inside, clean up, sleep, all the stuff you need.” His cheeks flushed a light pink, slightly embarrassed at the way he’d reacted and lowered his gaze to rest vacantly on Jake’s chest.
The halfdemon was more than content to just stand there with the other and hold on to him, it had been the longest two weeks of his life before he’d even realized it. He’d just packed up without even thinking about anyone else, but he was more than glad that it hadn’t been too long before he’d regretted it and sending out that message that he was okay had been the best idea he’d had in a long time. True he probably would have just stayed away if Travis hadn’t replied but the kid had so there he was, standing in New York once again but content this time.
The hand against the back of his neck dragged blue eyes open once more to look at the other, the smallest of smiles tugging at his lips at the sight of the colour painted across Travis’ cheeks. Bringing his hand up between them he took hold of the younger’s chin with his thumb and forefinger. “Don’t need anything else now” he muttered, admittedly a cheesy thing to say but then that was what had come out so he couldn’t take it back now. Pressing his lips to the younger’s he was helpless to stop the slight hitch in his breath at the feeling, entirely unaware of just how long he’d wanted to do that again. Sure it wasn’t the first time that he’d kissed the other but it damn well ment something vastly different this time around.
“Ya got a different reason? Coz I don’t see one.”
“Uh, cause you’re good looking with a shirt, but almost better without?”
“Shut up, ya just saying that coz ya like to make me go even redder.”
“If that’s what you want to believe, darlin’.”
“Gon’ kill J for forgettin’ to do the laundry. Ain’t got any clean shirts.”
“You’re the only one complaining.”
Flicking away the butt of the cigarette, he took a long slow breath and dropped his head forward to look at Jake properly, now that they were so close. Eyes stinging a little, he lifted a trembling hand but stopped before his fingers could touch Jake’s cheek. The laughter made him smile just a tiny bit and gave him the courage to reach out, brushing his fingertips over Jake’s jaw. Breath hitching, the hand dropped to grip the blond’s shoulder hard before Travis toppled forward into him and tried not to cling too hard and hurt him.
He sniffled but the threatening tears didn’t fall and his beaming smile was pressed into Jake’s neck as he wound his arms around the other man’s shoulders. “You’re really here.” He mumbled incredulously without moving away even the slightest bit. He didn’t know if he’d be able to stop touching Jake now that he’d started, now that he was allowed to. “Fuck, I’ve missed you.”
A soft grunt left the halfbreed as the younger slumped into him, he could have complained about the twinge in his ribs, or the pinch of the bruises that he pressed against but he didn’t care. Fingers twisted in Travis’ shirt dragging him that much closer as he adjusted his stance to accomodate the slightly shorter male, letting out a haggard breath into the younger’s shoulder.
“Of course I’m here” he chuckled lightly, “Told you I would be.” He knew that there was a genuine fear for the other that he might not have come back, but he didn’t make a point to lie to people that he liked. “Missed you too.”
Taking a long drag of his smoke to try and calm the nerves jangling in his stomach, he pulled his eyes from the bruises to take in all of Jake. “You, was expecting you, just not quite so soon.” He mumbled, still blushing. He wrinkled his nose at the obvious lie, “You did that on purpose. There are better ways of getting me off-balance, ya know.” Taking another long drag, he tilted his head and appraised him further. A raised eyebrow and a snort was his reaction, “Mouth is sayin’ one thing but ya body tells another story.” Despite the injuries, he looked good, really good. It was monumentally unfair, Travis thought, trying to keep the pout off his face.
Lifting the hand with the cigarette to his mouth, he set the thumbnail between his teeth and swallowed jerkily as he fought to get up the nerve to move. His face crumpled into a short scowl at the reminder before he wiped it off again. “As long as ya keep winning then it’s all good.” He said with a small smile, finally managing to step forward and let the door swing shut behind him. His steps were slow but steady and he stopped once his toes just touched the tip of Jake’s shoes. He took one last long drag of his smoke and tipped his head back to blow it out. Without lowering his head, he spoke using the excuse not to look at him. “Kinda feel like ya’ll disappear if I touch ya. And I don’ wanna hurt ya. S’only reason I ain’t yet.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about” he smirked lightly, tipping his head and looking up at the other through light eyelashes. “Could have sworn that I’d sent that a while ago” he was still lying and still doing it horribly, but that wasn’t the point, the point was that he’d still managed to catch the other off guard. “That’s usually the way” he gave a low chuckle trying not to wince as it jostled the abused ribs, “But my body is usually a liar” he paused a moment to look up at the other, “Or was it the other way around…” A shrug pulled through his shoulders.
“Oh I’ll always win” he reassured the other, though it was a shit promise in the last ninety years he hadn’t lost yet so why let him believe that he’d start now. Blue eyes watched at the younger moved towards him, keeping his hands in his pockets and allowing the other to make the first move he wasn’t about to scare the kid off. “I can promise you that I wont” his tone was low and reassuring, he knew the feeling of not believing that something was in front of you, he’d spent most of his life feeling like that. “You’re not going to hurt me, I’m a big boy” he chuckled again.
It was a good half an hour before Travis got back out of the shower, he’d always had the bad habit of taking long showers and he wasn’t about to skimp now when it was one of the few things that would calm him down. He wrapped a towel around his waist and used another to dry his hair, face and shoulders as he stared into his closet and tried to decide what to wear, before he realised he was being a moron and just grabbed his usual paint splattered jeans and a long-sleeved t-shirt, though he left all of the many scarves he owned in their place.
After drying off and getting dressed, he wandered back down into the main room after reading the text he’d been sent. Scud was back with the groceries so together they packed them away and then settled on the couch to bicker and watch cartoons, smoking and getting through a couple more beers each. Finally the text came through and Travis bounced to his feet, making his way out of the warehouse. As he opened the door, he yelled back over his shoulder in response to Scud’s latest taunt. “Try it and I’ll cut your fingers off. If you need something to do so bad, maybe you could finally fix the clicking noise my bike’s been making. I think it’s a starter problem.”
He heard Scud yell back in confirmation and propped the door open with a bare foot as he pulled a smoke from behind his ear and lit it. With that done, he turned and almost dropped his cigarette as he squeaked and blushed. “Sweet baby jesus, you made me jump.” He stuttered out, fidgeting where he stood. “That’s not five minutes.” He wanted to go over to Jake and just grab hold of him but he was frozen in place, staring with twitching fingers at the injuries.
The halfbreed couldn’t help but laugh a bit when the kid jumped, “Who were you expecting?” he teased a bit. “Wasn’t it? Hm, must have gotten mixed up” he smirked at him, arching a brow as Travis just stood there looking torn between clinging to him and babying him. “It’s not that bad you know, you look like I’m bleeding out” he snorted. He might have been under exaggerating some of the wounds, the worst was a possible broken rib… or two.
He kept his head tilted but was still looking up at the other, leaning back against the car with his ankles crossed, flicking the butt of his cigarette away from him.
“Told you, I have a habit of getting my ass kicked” he smirked a bit, tucking his hands into his coat and watching the younger male stand there still.
Pausing in the middle of putting clean sheets onto his bedding, he perched on the edge of his bed and laughed quietly at the text message.
[Text] Nah. He’s been smoking up and we were out of food anyway. He’d have gone sooner or later when the munchies hit. It’s actually a good thing coz this way he’ll buy what we need not just what he wants to satisfy the cravings.
He finished up with the bed and fussed with a few more things here and there in his room before the next message came and he leaned against the wall and smiled bashfully down at his phone.
[Text] Glad to know you get like that too. It’s nice not being the only one. Thank you about the crying thing. It won’t really be about you. It’s kinda a bad day for me. You’re making it better though.
[Text] Going for a shower. I’m a mess. I’ll reply when I get out.
His clothes got tossed into the laundry basket and he set his phone on the sink counter before hopping in the shower.
The halfbreed downed the last bit of his coffee before all but glaring at the other, he didn’t really want to have to stop to piss but he didn’t want to fall asleep driving either.
[text: Will be on the road when you get out, try not to stress too much. I’ll text you when I’m in the city.]
Tossing the phone into the passenger seat and turning up the radio to an obnoxious level he pulled away from the coffee shop. It wasn’t like he would be forever getting into the city, it wasn’t late enough to have to deal with much traffic and if he took the right roads he might be there sooner than he thought.
And he was, only about an hour and twenty minutes to get there, pulling the keys from the ignition and dragging his tired ass out of the car he leaned against the said looking up at the building that Travis and Scud occupied. He snorted, before fishing his phone out of the car through the window.
[text: Here. Be there in 5. Gonna meet me outside?]
Okay so he was lying a bit as he was already standing there but Travis didn’t need to know that. Plus he kind of wanted to see the kids face when he realized that it hadn’t been the truth. He was a dick, that wasn’t anything new.
He was distracted from his picking up by the phone again and he grinned, blushing at the text.
[Text] I’m calm ish. Just I don’t know. Nervous maybe? And I’m not ordering him around too much. Just making him go buy food coz we don’t got any and ya might just need feeding at some point.
He quickly finished his tidying, it was mostly just shoving things into the basic area designated for that and making sure nothing was on the floor to be tripped over. Scud finished at about the same time and gave him a quick hug before leaving to do the shopping. Then he wandered up stairs to his room.
[Text] I do trust you. More than anyone but my brother. I just couldn’t let myself get my hopes up. I kinda am a complete mental case so if I start crying on ya. Sorry in advance.
Sticking the phone back into his pocket, he went about sorting the clothes on the floor into the laundry basket or the closet and stripped the bed to put on clean sheets.
The halfbreed had been in the middle of ordering more coffee than anyone ever needed when his phone went off in his pocket, waiting until he was back in his car before bothering to look at the message.
[text: Oh yeah, I can feel the calm radiating off you from here. Your brother is going to hate me before I even get there to make him hate me myself.]
He couldn’t help but snicker at his own reply, he doubted that Scud would ever actually hate him unless he did something wrong to Travis, but as he had no active plans on doing so, he was probably good. That didn’t stop him from saying anything. All but lounging in his seat he cracked open the first coffee, determined to at least drink one before he even thought about getting on the road.
[text: You really know how to make a guy all squishy inside, darlin’. Not afraid of crying, so if you do that’s just fine.]
It wasn’t like he was going to stay away just because there was a chance that Travis might break down. If anything it made him want to be there more.
